Students Taught About Consent Using Spice Girls and Beyoncé

Students at the University of Warwick have developed a great new publicity campaign to promote consent workshops being delivered to students. They put a spin on the lyrics of famous female singers to start conversations around sex and the need to get an enthusiastic yes.

When I was a student at the university I attended one of these workshops and it was a great, positive atmosphere to discuss the issues and raise awareness. This is a big deal for the university as recently it made national headlines when student George Lawlor infamously held up a sign reading 'This is not what a rapist looks like' to protest the workshops. Reactions were fierce, with students pointing out that 80% of attackers know their victim and can be from any background. Indeed, one in seven female students are raped or sexually assaulted at university.

I spoke to Chloe Wynne, the Student Union Women's Officer who launched the campaign. She said, "I felt that on our campus there was need to tap into a mass audience about consent. The SU hosts workshops on consent every year but they have a limited reach. So the issue we faced was how to try and get more people thinking about sexual consent in an accessible, eye-catching and unforgettable way.

The images I created contain a provocative, sexual proposal from well-known, contemporary songs, and then the next line is edited so as to raise the issue of consent. Hopefully, this gets stuck in people's heads and they're left singing the Spice Girls for the rest of the day, but also remember how poignant the next line is, when consent is introduced."
